The Sperm Whale is the Largest of all toothed whales and can grow as big as a humpback whale. It has a distinct, large block shaped head and wrinkly skin.

It is an incredible diver, diving to depths of up to 2km, holding their breath for over 90 minutes, hunting for giant squid.

It has the largest brain of any animal known to live on earth! Their heads hold large amounts of a waxy substance called spermaceti. This fluid is said to help them with their buoyancy, as well as in focusing their clicks during echolocation.

Sri Lanka is considered one of the top sites in the world for sperm whales. It may be the best place to see sperm whale ‘superpods’- dozens of these awesome species assembled and visible at the same time.
